Disrupting cortico-cerebellar communication impairs dexterity

چکیده
To control reaching, the nervous system must generate large changes in muscle activation to drive limb toward target, and also make smaller adjustments for precise accurate behavior. Motor cortex controls arm through projections diverse targets across central system, but it has been challenging identify roles of cortical specific targets. Here, we selectively disrupt cortico-cerebellar communication mouse by optogenetically stimulating pontine nuclei a cued reaching task. This perturbation did not typically block movement initiation, degraded precision, accuracy, duration, or success rate movement. Correspondingly, cerebellar activity during were largely preserved, differences hand velocity between stimulation conditions predicted from neural correlated with observed differences. These results suggest that while total output motor drives loop makes small contribute successful execution this dexterous

Cortico-cortical communication dynamics
In principle, cortico-cortical communication dynamics is simple: neurons in one cortical area communicate by sending action potentials that release glutamate and excite their target neurons in other cortical areas. In practice, knowledge about cortico-cortical communication dynamics is minute. One reason is that no current technique can capture the fast spatio-temporal cortico-cortical evolutio...
متن کاملDisrupted cortico-cerebellar connectivity in older adults
Healthy aging is marked by declines in a variety of cognitive and motor abilities. A better understanding of the aging brain may aid in elucidating the neural substrates of these behavioral effects. Investigations of resting state functional brain connectivity have provided insights into pathology, and to some degree, healthy aging. Given the role of the cerebellum in both motor and cognitive b...

This review paper focuses on studies in healthy human subjects that examined the functional neuroanatomy and cerebral plasticity associated with the learning, consolidation and retention phases of motor skilled behaviors using modern brain imaging techniques. Evidence in support of a recent model proposed by Doyon and Ungerleider [Functional Anatomy of Motor Skill Learning. In: Squire LR, Schac...
متن کاملFrequency-Specific Coupling in the Cortico-Cerebellar Auditory System
Induced oscillatory activity in the auditory cortex peaks at around 40 Hz in humans. Using regional cerebral blood flow and positron emission tomography we previously confirmed frequency-selective cortical responses to 40-Hz tones in auditory primary cortices and concomitant bilateral activation of the cerebellar hemispheres. In this study, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we ...
متن کاملCerebellar degeneration affects cortico-cortical connectivity in motor learning networks
The cerebellum plays an important role in motor learning as part of a cortico-striato-cerebellar network. Patients with cerebellar degeneration typically show impairments in different aspects of motor learning, including implicit motor sequence learning. How cerebellar dysfunction affects interactions in this cortico-striato-cerebellar network is poorly understood. The present study investigate...
